take flight

Give me a bicycle, give me Central Park.
As if I were one of the child’s kites,
I will begin to talk flight.

Just a little speed is all we need,
To feel the lightness in our knees.

It is in our heart from the start.

Do a cartwheel, one back handspring.
Remembering that youthful feeling.

Imagine through all of this cynicism,
Exists this optimistic simplicity.

The idea just to be.

12 extra hours

Welcome readers,

I hope your week is going well.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of going to Mexico City. Although I definitely want to share some pictures and suggest one of the hotels I stayed in, I also want to talk about control. The day before I was departing I realized my flight was 1 am, not 1 pm as I originally thought. OOPS. Initially I had a slew of overwhelming thoughts and considered changing my flight. However, after taking a deep breath, I convinced myself (with the help of my special someone) I could get everything done. Because I believed I could, I did. Moreover, I gained an extra 12 hours of vacation time! I am a sure-fast Capricorn, so control feels oh so good, but when funny mishaps like this happen, the more I let go, the more joy I experience.

With the extra 12 hours I stayed at hotel habita. Definitely checkout their lobby restaurant for yummy veggie options (I indulged in their sun-dried tomato, goat cheese crepe) or grab a cocktail on their beautiful roof deck!

Warmly,

Genni.

quickie

Hi there,

Spring is here in NYC – eh kinda. The days are steadily getting longer, yet it is still chilly. The cold weather really increases my cravings! Therefore, I opt for more hearty veggie options. A nice tofu sandwich and stuffed grape leaves are a quick way to feel satisfied. Pair with a simple side of greens and you’re good to go! The beautiful photographs are courtesy of acamerainthekitchen.com.

XO,

Genni.

regurgitation

Regurgitation of my food feels so much better
Than the regurgitation of your thoughts.

Education in not about memorization to make an A,
It is about critical analysis of who we are.
No child is left behind; to think for him or herself.

I REFUSE TO ACCEPT EDUCATION AS
REGURGITATION.

I have passed your test just to find out that I can pass a
test.
What good does this do me now that I am out?
What fairness and equality does this bring?
What autonomy can ever be achieved?

The answer to the last question is key.
Propaganda cannot be so easily bought
By those who know how to use their critical thought.

As I sit here and chew on all the multiple choices you
throw at me,
I have vividly begun to see why I want this regurgitated.
My education will be for my preservation;
My conscious thoughts are my one true haven.

huvr and health

Welcome,

As a graduate student in biobehavioral health I get to read innovative research on virtual reality and its future. Today I am sharing a video clip from huvr board. Although reports are coming out that it is a hoax, it is still truly awesome (and looks like so much fun). I envision the impact that it can have in the medical world – specifically within rehabilitation clinics. For instance, the board may have the capacity to help assist limbs with limited mobility. This gentle, low-impact option could allow for range of motion exercises that help the patient cultivate higher moving independence. What do you think? What other directions can we start taking medical robotics and virtual reality? Leave comments below or e-mail me at gennihester@gmail.com!

With love,

Gen.
