Wait, Weight, Wait

Today I share a poem from my book memoirs of the am. May it both inspire you and help you find comfort during the holiday season. Enjoy every bite guilt-free… Wishing you and yours a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Wait, Weight, Wait

Just wait, before you finish your day,
The thought of pounds, your weight,
Will most likely come to mind.

Don’t worry; it’s part of the design.
I want to prosecute the crime of this confusion.

Showing size zeros;
Those with eating disorders.
Yet, providing innutritious food,
To those waiting to lose weight.

This constant debate in our society has us
Waiting to weigh in. With our money, time, and health.

Waiting for truth to weight-loss cannot be bought.
Just STOP eating what they tell you is good,
And follow your heart – set yourself apart.

Don’t weight.

This Polluted Mind

It is the illusion that causes the pollution in our mind
Making us blind to who we are.

Very unkind, unrefined, this illusion of the mind.

Perception is a part of the design living in our material world.
Being a part of this lie.

– Metaphysics of the mind –
The lack of capability seems like an innocent crime.

The signs multiply, yet they are ignored. Tell me child,
Who is your lord?

Your perception is what it is: correct to you. What must you do?

Don’t change your thoughts or ideas. Burn them.

Burn it all and see what is left, but you can’t. Not even your vision will reappear.

You are no longer blind to the design; your mind is free
To imagine each and every single possibility.

weight-loss, body image, and holiday expectations

Several of us struggle with body image; for some it is a chronic issue. Both societal and familial pressure is exacerbated during the holidays. Moreover, holiday gatherings centered around food may lead to intense frustration. As a yoga guide I work with students to bring awareness back to the physical body and appreciation for everything it can do rather than what expectations it may not perfectly fit. As a young female poet I have reflected on my own body image. Having the lived experience of being bombarded by all of the above has shaped both my personal and professional life. Today I share a poem from my book memoirs of the am. May it inspire you and help you find comfort during the holiday chaos. If you feel out-of-conrol regarding this topic, stop struggling and try a new approach. You can contact me for my online coaching sessions where we develop strategies together to overcome anxiety. It is a choice, luckily there is help along the path.

Two bodies

Two bodies face to face
are at times two waves
and night is an ocean.

Two bodies face to face
are at times two stones
and night a desert.

Two bodies face to face
are at times two roots
laced into night.

Two bodies face to face
are at times two knives
and night strikes sparks.

Two bodies face to face
are two stars falling
in an empty sky.

my first book

Five years ago today I published my first book, memoirs of the am.

I describe it as follows: “memoirs of the am is a collection of poetry I began writing out of a deep need to express my lived experience. It grapples with the realities of a first time voter in the 2008 election. It posits deep ethical and philosophical questions with a meditative tone.”

Although my next collection of poetry has taken a bit longer to write, I hope for it to be out late 2015 or early 2016. Until then, celebrate with me today and get your very own copy.

With eyes closed

With eyes closed
you light up within
you are blind stone

Night after night I carve you
with eyes closed
you are frank stone

We have become enormous
just knowing each other
with eyes closed
